Among the small towns of southern Westphalia Attendorn takes a privileged place due to its economic importance, its tourism and its rich past. Nestled in a basin of the Bigge River, it is surrounded by a ring of mountains, forests, castles and lakes. The oldest known form of the name Attendorn, appearing in a 1072 AD document describing the foundation of a count's Benedictine monastery, calls it "Attandarra“. By the early Middle Ages the settlement had already become significant and in 1222 a town charter was granted. Centuries pass; the city emerges from the darkness of the past into the bright light of history.
