The Naval War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain was a contest between David and Goliath. The small American navy was over-matched against Britain’s fleets yet had spectacular success in the early stages of the war. This was due to its initial advantages. Britain’s merchant ships were widely scattered across the Atlantic and unprotected while its warships were still engaged against the French. Eventually, with the defeat of Napoleon, the advantage shifted to the British. They were able to unleash more of their warships for raids against the American coast, blockade more ports and shift from the hunted to the hunters.
In the Naval War of 1812 game one player controls the American ships, and the other player controls the British ships. It puts players in the roles of the American and British navies on a global scale as they seek out each others warships while hunting their merchants on the high seas. So prepare to sail into the past and remember, “Don’t Give Up the Ship!”
